Ontario is one of 10 provinces and three territories in Canada - a democracy similar to other democracies around the world. Canada has three levels of government - federal, provincial and municipal.
Our federal government is responsible for nation-wide concerns such as foreign affairs and defense, health and justice. The Federal Government of Canada is composed of an elected House of Commons, including elected Members of Parliament (MPs) and led by the Prime Minister and his Cabinet, and an appointed Senate.
The Provincial Government of Ontario is responsible for a variety of important services, including postsecondary education and health care. Ontario's provincial government is composed of elected Members of Provincial Parliament (MPPs), Cabinet Ministers who oversee government departments, and the Premier, the head of the provincial government.
Cities and towns take responsibility for municipal matters such as local bridge and road repairs, public transportation, recycling and garbage collection, sewage system maintenance and public utilities.
